Transforming lives in Ethiopia

Transform lives in your lifetime
with a founding donation to the The Lifetime Fund today.

The Lifetime Fund has been launched in memory of Ethiopiaid’s founder, Sir Alec Reed CBE, and in celebration of the lifetime of philanthropy he dedicated to Ethiopia. Sir Alec will be greatly missed by all of us at Ethiopiaid and we will continue to be inspired by his values and approach. His amazing legacy will live on through all the people he has helped and through the future work of our partners in Ethiopia.

Continuing Sir Alec Reed's legacy

As we celebrate the legacy of Sir Alec’s life, we invite you to watch this video, made in 2019 to mark Ethiopiaid’s 30th anniversary. He reflected on his journey, the relationships he built, and his deep appreciation for our committed supporters.

Championing specialist Ethiopian organisations

Sir Alec believed that Ethiopian organisations were best placed to understand and support their own communities. The trust he placed in Ethiopian partners was an inspiration. The strength of this empowering approach is now widely adopted by other charities. He championed causes that were often overlooked like support for women with obstetric fistula hidden away due to stigma
and shame; and women and girls in rural areas subjected to FGM.

Hope of Light is a lasting legacy of the relationships built by Sir Alec.

Hope of Light was founded by Dr Ambaye Weldemichael, a renowned fistula surgeon, who was originally trained by Dr Catherine Hamlin. From meeting Dr Hamlin in 1994 and building a strong partnership onwards, Sir Alec believed no woman should be left to suffer in silence after childbirth. Yet for many women living with obstetric fistula – a devastating childbirth injury – pain, isolation and stigma become part of daily life when treatment is out of reach.

Hope of Light offers expert care and compassionate support to women affected by fistula, restoring health and protecting dignity for so many.

From surgery and counselling to outreach in underserved communities, this work helps women rebuild their lives with renewed confidence. By reaching women who are too often overlooked, this partnership helps ensure they are not left behind.

Your gift to The Lifetime Fund could provide reliable monthly support to help women access life-changing fistula treatment and compassionate care.

Hope Enterprises started by providing meals for people who have nowhere else to turn; children and young people, women in crisis and people with disabilities living on the streets.

Hope provides free school, uniform and books for children who would otherwise not be able to afford it, from primary school all the way to college and university.

They were one of the earliest partnerships that Sir Alec forged because he understood that children cannot learn, grow, or imagine a different future if they are hungry. When the safety net isn’t there and children end up on the streets, there may be no one to notice if they fall ill, get into trouble or, tragically, die.

Thanks to Ethiopiaid supporters, 200 children in Addis Ababa can now rely on a daily meal, and with it, the chance to attend school. Without this vital intervention, many would simply vanish from view.

Your gift to The Lifetime Fund will help children receive an education and join a community of care and support they might otherwise never know.

Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA) works with remote communities in Ethiopia’s Afar region to protect the rights of women and girls and help end harmful practices.

In Afar, where harmful practices such as FGM and child marriage continue to threaten lives and futures, APDA works to bring change from within communities. In one of Ethiopia’s most remote regions, they reach women and girls who are too often overlooked and excluded from support.

Through trusted Women Extension Workers and respected religious leaders, APDA helps women and girls feel seen, heard and supported. This partnership is helping build a future where more girls can grow up safe, and free to choose their own path.

Your gift to The Lifetime Fund will help build a future where no women or girls are left behind.

Sir Alec Reed and Ethiopiaid

Sir Alec’s interest in Ethiopia began in 1987 when he was invited to visit the country by an Ethiopian development worker. From this point onwards Sir Alec was committed to helping improve the lives of people in Ethiopia and went on to found Ethiopiaid in the autumn of 1989. He recognised that local Ethiopian NGOs are best placed to understand the challenges and deliver the most effective solutions.

Sir Alec was involved in philanthropy throughout his working life. He liked to visit and personally keep in touch with the partners to better understand the challenges they were facing.

Sir Alec was knighted for his service to business and charity in 2011. His last visit to Ethiopia was aged 80 years old with a group of supporters to mark Ethiopiaid’s 25th anniversary in 2012.

In January 2024 Sir Alec was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the government of Ethiopia, in recognition of a lifetime’s dedicated commitment to improve the lives of people in Ethiopia.
