Life saving cervical cancer screening

Every year in Ethiopia over 5,000 people die from cervical cancer. But it is preventable and treatable. A screening costs just €3.00, but sadly, too many women cannot access this care.

Our partner Wings of Healing’s life-saving project tackles critical gaps in cervical cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment across underserved communities.

This year, three cervical cancer disability ambassadors were selected each representing hearing, visual, and physical impairments. Together with these ambassadors, Wings of Healing have delivered tailored health education in specialist schools and associations

Aberash's story

Aberash, a 36-year-old history teacher, attended one of Wings of Healing’s health education sessions, at the Ethiopian National Association of the Blind (ENAB). She expressed her deep appreciation: “This is the first time I’ve received a Braille brochure during a health session. It made the information accessible to me in a way I’ve never experienced before.”

With a clearer understanding of cervical cancer, Aberash is now motivated to advocate for awareness among her students.

“I will definitely share this message with my students and encourage them to get vaccinated. Many people assume that persons with disabilities are immune to such health issues, but in reality, we are at even greater risk especially in the context of sexual violence and HIV.”

Aberash also applauded the initiative of involving disability ambassadors.

“Having people from our own community deliver the message was powerful. It felt like the message came from someone who truly understands us”

Reaching the women who need it most

In addition to raising awareness of cervical cancer risks, and the importance of screening, the team at Wings of Healing provide free screening and treatment for women across Addis Ababa.

To ensure the sustainability of their project, they work to equip health centres with medical supplies and train healthcare professionals.

Their particular focus is reaching the women who face the biggest barriers in accessing healthcare services.
