Mastewal Acha was forced into marriage at the age of sixteen and soon became pregnant. But her young, frail body simply wasn’t prepared for childbirth and she endured two horrific days of agonizing obstructed labour. Her baby had become stuck in her pelvis and died. This was not the end of Mastewal's nightmare. She was left with a hole between her bladder and vagina - a fistula injury. Urine constantly ran down her legs and wherever she went, a foul smell followed her. She suffered crippling pain too – a never-ending reminder of the loss of a child through no fault of her own. But thanks to Ethiopiaid supporters and the trained professionals at Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, Mastewal was able to have surgery, completely curing her incontinence. I’m delighted to say that one year later, Mastewal safely gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.
