Transforming lives in Ethiopia

An urgent update from northern Ethiopia

Reading time: 1 min

We are deeply concerned by reports of escalating violence and instability in northern Ethiopia, particularly in Tigray and along the border with Afar.

While the 2022 peace agreement brought hope after two years of devastating conflict, recent clashes and rising political tensions are threatening the fragile recovery of communities that have already endured immense hardship. The United Nations has warned that the situation remains highly volatile and that civilians risk once again being caught in the middle of renewed violence.

The consequences for families are severe. Many people have yet to recover from the previous conflict, with more than a million people still displaced from their homes and struggling to rebuild their lives. Any return to widespread instability could further disrupt access to food, healthcare, education, and livelihoods at a time when communities are already facing extreme economic pressures.

Our partners are monitoring developments closely and we all remain committed to supporting vulnerable communities wherever possible.  We will keep you updated.
