Zero Tolerance to FGM

10 Reasons to show Zero Tolerance to

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

FGM is an immensely painful, illegal practice.

In Faatuma’s region up to 91.2% of girls are living with FGM (UNICEF, 2016).

Women living with FGM often suffer throughout their lives – it can have a lasting effect on their maternal health.

Girls have to experience psychological trauma during the cutting process (UNICEF, 2005).

Progress is already being made – Ethiopia showed a reduction of 5.6% in FGM prevalence over five years (28 Too Many, 2013).

FGM is not a religious practice – education can help communities understand this.

Educating just five generations could eradicate FGM (28 Too Many, 2013).

Fighting against FGM works towards 6 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

People like Faatuma are educating their friends and daughters about FGM.

It costs just €55 to train an extension worker to protect more girls in Ethiopia from this harmful practice.
