Ethiopiaid helped sponsor my place at University

Manale Kebede studies science and technology at Hope University College.

Thanks to Ethiopiaid supporters Manale’s fees are sponsored which meant that she can continue studying without worry.

Between her studies, she works for 2 hours, 2 times a week in the photocopying room.  Doing this earns her 30 ETB per week, which helps with the cost of food and transport.

Manale is the first in her family to pursue higher education. She lives approximately two hours away from the campus – sharing a house with her mother, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.  They all labour on the family farm.

Helping Students fulfil their potential

Manale has great hopes for her future and aims to secure employment in the production industry. The teachers and Dean of students at Hope University College are very proud of Manale, and all that she has achieved.

For young women like Manale, University was previously a luxury that only the wealthy could afford.

Hope University College, a first in Ethiopia

Hope University College opened in October 2011, as the first not-for-profit higher learning institute in Ethiopia. Over 1,000 students are currently supported to study courses in business, accountancy, architecture, marketing, information systems and technology and food sciences and technology – an opportunity that these young people would otherwise never have had. Over half of these students are female.

Thanks to Hope University College young men and women like Manale are able to create better futures for themselves and their families. Ethiopiaid believes strongly in the work Hope University College does and the lives they change.
